Five Italians and a Maldivian Diver Perish in Fatal Cave Dive
A tragic cave diving incident in the Maldives has claimed the lives of five Italian nationals and a local rescue diver. The divers, who were conducting a research expedition near Vaavu Atoll, vanished after failing to surface on a Thursday morning. Rough sea conditions and a yellow maritime warning were in effect at the time.
Subsequent search operations, carried out by a joint team of Finnish and Maldivian divers, located the bodies of four Italians inside a 60‑metre‑deep cave. A fifth body had already been recovered shortly after the accident. The deceased Italians were members of a University of Genoa research group: Professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researcher Muriel Oddenino, researcher Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti.
An additional Maldivian diver, Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahdhee, died while searching for the missing bodies on Saturday. He was among eight divers who entered the water; he failed to surface and was later found unconscious.
The incident is considered the worst single diving disaster in the Maldives, a nation famed for its coral islands and diving tourism. Official statements confirm that the research team had a valid permit covering up to 50 metres, but the cave was not listed in their proposal. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
Further dives are planned to recover the remaining bodies, and officials are reviewing safety protocols for future underwater research missions.
