Five Rescued After Week Trapped in Flooded Laos Cave
A harrowing rescue operation in Laos has successfully located five villagers alive after they spent a week trapped inside a flooded cave system. The group had entered the cave, located approximately 120 kilometers north of the capital, Vientiane, in search of gold and wildlife when heavy rains and subsequent landslides blocked their exit, leaving them stranded in the subterranean environment.
Rescue teams, including specialized divers, navigated treacherous conditions to reach the survivors. The cave system is described as extremely narrow and hazardous, with some passages measuring only 50 centimeters in width. Divers faced significant challenges, including floodwaters, collapse risks, and poor air quality, as they worked to reach the trapped individuals, who were estimated to be located roughly 300 meters from the cave entrance.
While five members of the group have been brought to safety, the search continues for two remaining villagers who are still missing. The operation has drawn on the expertise of seasoned rescue professionals, including those with experience in high-profile cave extraction missions in the region. Efforts to locate the final two individuals remain ongoing as teams continue to comb the complex, flooded network.
