Mystery Explosive-Laden Naval Drone Discovered in Ionian Sea
Greek authorities successfully neutralized a suspected military naval drone found drifting off the coast of Lefkada. The unmanned vessel, which was discovered by local fishermen with its engine still active, was carrying an estimated 100 kilograms of explosives. Following the recovery, bomb disposal experts extracted the detonators and battery before conducting a controlled explosion near the port of Astakos to ensure public safety.
Preliminary investigations suggest the vessel is a Ukrainian-made Magura drone, a platform known for its use in targeting naval assets in the Black Sea. Handwritten notes in Ukrainian were reportedly found on board, fueling speculation regarding how the craft entered the Ionian Sea. Experts are currently analyzing the drone’s GPS and sensor systems, which appeared to be damaged, to determine if the vessel was lost due to navigational failure, severe weather, or a loss of signal during a clandestine operation.
The unexpected arrival of the drone has sparked a heated debate within Greece regarding maritime security and the nation’s readiness for modern, autonomous warfare. While opposition figures have criticized the government’s ability to monitor its coastal waters, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has sought to reassure the public, emphasizing that the military is actively developing its own advanced drone and anti-drone capabilities.
This incident has drawn attention to the expanding scope of naval drone usage in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has increasingly extended beyond the Black Sea. With Greece and Ukraine having recently signed a cooperation agreement focused on naval drone production, the discovery has prompted urgent inquiries from various political factions seeking to understand the drone’s intended mission and the extent of foreign military activity within Greek territorial waters.
