A residential apartment block in the Romanian town of Galați was struck by a Russian drone on Friday, marking the first time a drone incursion during the ongoing conflict has resulted in civilian injuries. The explosion, which occurred on the 10th floor of the building, forced the evacuation of approximately 70 residents and left two individuals requiring medical treatment for abrasions. Romanian defense officials confirmed that the projectile was a Geran 2 drone, commonly known as a Shahed 136, which detonated its entire explosive payload upon impact.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan described the event as the most severe incident to affect the nation since the start of the war in Ukraine. Preliminary investigations suggest the drone was initially targeted by Ukrainian air defenses, which caused it to deviate from its intended path and cross the border. In response to the breach, the Romanian government has moved to expel the Russian consul in Constanța and shutter the consulate, while the nation’s defense ministry has requested an accelerated transfer of anti-drone technology from Nato allies to bolster border security.

Nato leadership and international officials have strongly condemned the strike, characterizing it as a dangerous escalation of the conflict. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the alliance’s commitment to defending every inch of its territory, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the incident represents yet another line crossed by Russian forces. Despite the heightened tensions, Romanian military officials noted the extreme difficulty of defending the Danube border region, citing strict operational constraints that prevent them from firing munitions into Ukrainian airspace to intercept incoming threats.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin has questioned the origin of the drone and suggested an investigation, the incident has reignited calls for increased support for Ukraine and enhanced security measures along the Eastern flank of the alliance. With 47 separate instances of drone fragments being discovered on Romanian soil since the beginning of the war, the strike in Galați has intensified the debate over how Nato members can effectively mitigate the risks posed by the spillover of the conflict into neighboring sovereign territory.
