The United States government has officially sanctioned Faustine Jackson Mafwele, a senior assistant commissioner within the Tanzanian Police Force, following allegations of severe human rights violations. The designation, announced by the State Department, cites credible evidence linking the official to the torture and sexual assault of two East African activists, Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire, during their detention in Tanzania last year.

The incident occurred while the two activists were in the country to observe the trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Upon their detention, both individuals reported being subjected to brutal treatment, including physical beatings and sexual violence. While Tanzanian authorities previously dismissed these accounts as hearsay, the US government has moved forward with the sanctions, which include a formal travel ban preventing Mafwele from entering the United States.

This move marks the first time a senior official under the administration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan has faced such international penalties. The sanctions arrive amid a broader climate of concern regarding Tanzania’s political landscape, characterized by reports of increased repression, the suppression of free speech, and allegations of violence surrounding recent electoral processes.
