Violence and Vandalism Mar Paris Celebrations Following PSG’s Champions League Win
Paris was gripped by unrest on Wednesday night as celebrations surrounding Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-final descended into violence. Law enforcement officials reported that 127 individuals were taken into custody across the Paris region, with the vast majority of arrests occurring within the city limits as police struggled to manage various outbreaks of disorder.
The celebrations were marked by significant property damage and public disturbances. Rioters set fire to vehicles and trash containers, and an outdoor photography exhibition at the Place de la Concorde was targeted by vandals. Near the Parc des Princes, security forces utilized tear gas to prevent crowds from obstructing the périphérique ring road. The clashes resulted in injuries to 23 police officers and 11 civilians, with one individual suffering serious injuries from a firework.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has taken a firm stance against the disturbances, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for such violence. While the scale of the disorder was noted to be less intense than in previous post-match celebrations, the incidents have cast a shadow over the upcoming final against Arsenal. Local authorities are currently evaluating the safety of hosting public fan zones, attempting to find a way to accommodate supporter enthusiasm without compromising urban security.
