NASA has officially announced the appointment of Brian Hughes as the new senior director of launch operations. Based at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Hughes is tasked with providing enterprise-level leadership and strategic oversight for the agency’s critical launch infrastructure. His remit includes managing launch operations not only at the Florida spaceport but also at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

In this pivotal role, Hughes will serve as a primary liaison between government agencies, private industry partners, and local leaders. His objective is to enhance coordination across these stakeholders to support a higher frequency of launch missions, effectively aligning the agency’s operational capacity with the goals established in the National Space Policy. NASA leadership highlighted that his experience will be instrumental as the agency navigates an increasingly complex landscape of civil, commercial, and national security space activities.

Hughes brings a diverse professional background to the position, having previously served as NASA’s chief of staff. His resume also includes significant experience in high-level government and public administration, including a tenure as deputy national security advisor for Strategic Communications at the White House and as the chief administrative officer for the City of Jacksonville. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Hughes served as a KC-135 aircrew member during the Gulf War, providing him with a foundation in mission-critical operations that the agency believes will be vital for the future of American space exploration.
