Top Buddhist Prelate Detained in Sri Lanka Amid Rape Allegations
A prominent Buddhist monk, holding a significant position within Sri Lanka’s religious hierarchy, has been arrested and ordered into remand custody. The charges involve the alleged rape and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl. The monk, identified as the Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, serves as the custodian of eight sacred Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, a role that carries considerable reverence both domestically and internationally.
The arrest followed a formal request from the nation’s child protection authority. This agency had previously expressed concern over the delay in apprehending the prelate, despite him being named as a suspect in the ongoing investigation. The situation has drawn attention to the complexities of law enforcement and justice within the country, particularly concerning influential religious figures.
Pallegama Hemarathana Thero has not issued any public statement regarding the accusations leveled against him. He is scheduled to appear before a court on May 12th. In a related development, the alleged victim’s mother has also been arrested and remanded, facing charges of aiding and abetting the abuse.
The arrest took place on Saturday while the monk was undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. A magistrate subsequently ordered his transfer to the Colombo prison hospital. Additionally, immigration officials have been instructed to prevent any attempt by the prelate to leave the country. The arrest of such a high-ranking monk is considered highly unusual in Sri Lanka, a nation where Buddhist clergy often wield significant political influence and are deeply respected by the populace.
