The global surge in fuel prices has fundamentally altered consumer motivations for purchasing electric vehicles, according to Michael Lohscheller, CEO of EV manufacturer Polestar. Previously driven by environmental ideals, the decision to opt for an EV is now predominantly a financial one, Lohscheller observed, noting that “pump anxiety” has superseded traditional “range anxiety” as a primary concern for prospective buyers.

This shift in consumer behavior is largely attributable to escalating global energy costs, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, including disruptions in vital shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz and recent conflicts involving the U.S. and Israel in the Middle East. These events have propelled oil prices significantly higher, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures and international benchmark Brent crude futures experiencing approximately 50% increases since late February. Consequently, Polestar has witnessed a notable uptick in demand for both new and pre-owned electric vehicles.

Despite the rising demand, Polestar, a Chinese-owned, Sweden-based company, reported a widening net loss of $383 million in the first quarter, even as vehicle volumes grew by 7% year-on-year. Lohscheller attributed these financial pressures to an intensely competitive automotive landscape, particularly in markets like China, alongside broader pricing challenges and the impact of tariffs imposed by the EU and U.S. He emphasized the urgent need for Europe to accelerate its EV adoption strategies.

Lohscheller also highlighted market uncertainties in the United States, pointing to the phasing out of certain tax incentives and persistent consumer concerns regarding the overall rising cost of living and vehicle ownership. The CEO’s remarks underscore a complex market environment where global events, economic pressures, and fierce competition are all playing a critical role in shaping the future of electric mobility.
