Syphilis infections have similarly surged, more than doubling to 45,557 during the same timeframe. Experts attribute this trend to significant gaps in testing and prevention strategies, noting that these infections carry risks of severe long-term health complications, including chronic pain, infertility, and potential damage to the heart and nervous system.

The impact of this rise is particularly concerning regarding congenital syphilis, where infections are transmitted to newborns, leading to lifelong health challenges. Cases of congenital transmission nearly doubled between 2023 and 2024. While men who have sex with men remain the most disproportionately affected demographic, health authorities have also observed a notable rise in syphilis diagnoses among heterosexual women of reproductive age. Spain currently reports the highest volume of these infections among participating European nations.
