A federal judge has been formally disciplined following an investigation into allegations of professional misconduct, including engaging in sexual activity within their chambers during business hours. The Committee on Judicial Conduct and Disability of the Judicial Council of the United States confirmed the findings, noting that the judge’s actions occurred within earshot of staff members and involved a high-ranking law enforcement officer. The investigation also revealed that the judge attended a partisan political event and initially provided false statements to superior judges during the inquiry.

The probe was initiated after a law clerk reported that the judge had engaged in sexual intercourse with a police official on multiple occasions while court was in session. Further investigation, which included reviewing security footage, visitor logs, and conducting acoustic testing in the chambers, corroborated the claims. The committee noted that the affair lasted approximately two years and occurred while the officer’s department had active cases pending in the district, creating a significant conflict of interest and leaving the judge vulnerable to potential blackmail.

Despite the severity of the findings, the judge’s identity remains shielded from public disclosure. Sanctions imposed by the 11th Circuit Judicial Council include a requirement for the judge to issue formal apologies to six former law clerks who were subjected to the environment, a prohibition on serving as a chief judge, and a ban on participating in Judicial Conference committees. The committee opted against more severe penalties, citing the judge’s eventual cooperation, the termination of the affair, and a commitment to avoid future political entanglements.
