A violent stabbing attack at the Winterthur train station has left three people injured and sparked an investigation into potential extremist motives. The incident, which occurred during the morning commute, involved a 31-year-old Swiss man using a bladed weapon to attack bystanders in a station underpass.

The victims, three Swiss nationals aged 28, 43, and 52, were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. The 52-year-old victim underwent emergency surgery for a severe thigh wound, while the other two individuals sustained injuries to their legs and necks. Eyewitnesses reported a scene of chaos as the attacker reportedly shouted religious slogans during the assault. Notably, a school teacher was able to shield a group of passing schoolchildren from the violence.

Authorities have revealed that the suspect has a history of interest in extremist ideologies, having previously come to the attention of law enforcement in 2015 for distributing Islamic State propaganda. The suspect had recently been hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation following incoherent statements but was cleared by doctors just days before the attack.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed deep shock over the incident, describing it as a terrorist attack. Security officials in the Canton of Zurich have indicated that the investigation is focusing heavily on radicalization and extremism as the primary drivers behind the assault.
