Joy Multiplied: Ethiopian Mother’s 12-Year Dream Culminates in Quintuplet Birth
An Ethiopian woman, Bedriya, 35, has celebrated an extraordinary blessing, welcoming naturally conceived quintuplets after a 12-year wait to become a mother. The rare birth, comprising four boys and one girl, took place at Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital, where all five newborns are reported to be in excellent health. This joyous event marks a profoundly emotional turning point for Bedriya, who had long yearned for a child.
Medical director Dr. Mohammed Nur Abdulahi confirmed that both Bedriya and her five infants remain under diligent medical care at the hospital. Each baby weighed between 1.3 and 1.4 kilograms, a healthy weight range that offers a high probability of survival and robust growth. Dr. Abdulahi highlighted the exceptional rarity of the natural conception, estimating the odds of quintuplets without fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) to be approximately one in 55 million. The delivery was successfully performed via Caesarean section on Tuesday evening, following consistent medical supervision throughout Bedriya’s pregnancy, during which she was informed she was carrying multiple babies.
Bedriya recounted her long and often painful journey, marked by deep emotional distress and the psychological burden of societal expectations. She expressed immense relief and gratitude, reflecting on how her prayers for even a single child were answered fivefold. While acknowledging the financial challenges ahead as a subsistence farmer, she voiced a strong belief that her community and the government will rally to support her newly expanded family. The five blessings have been named Naif, Ammar, Munzir, Nazira, and Ansar, bringing an end to years of silent suffering and ushering in a new chapter of hope and joy.
