Wordle Set to Make the Leap from Mobile App to Television Game Show
The viral word puzzle game Wordle is moving from screens to the television stage, with plans officially underway to adapt the hit title into a fast-paced broadcast game show on NBC. The project, which has been in development for over two years, will feature “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie as host. Television personality Jimmy Fallon is also attached to the production, marking a significant expansion for the game’s intellectual property.
While the original digital game is known for its slow, contemplative pace that allows players to deliberate over letter choices, organizers describe the upcoming television version as a high-energy, family-friendly experience. This collaboration represents a notable milestone for the media company behind the game, as it continues to diversify its entertainment offerings and prioritize digital growth to offset shifts in traditional media revenue.
Originally created by software engineer Josh Wardle in 2021, the game was acquired in early 2022 and quickly became a cornerstone of a growing portfolio of digital puzzles. The franchise has seen massive engagement, with users completing over 11 billion puzzles in the last year alone. Production for the show is scheduled to begin this summer, and the network is actively recruiting contestants to participate in the new format, which is slated to premiere next year.
