Aimable Karasira, a well-known Rwandan singer and former university lecturer, has died while in the process of being released from custody. According to the Rwanda Correctional Service, the 48-year-old passed away at Nyarugenge Hospital following an alleged overdose of his prescription medication. Officials stated that Karasira suffered from several chronic health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, and noted that a formal post-mortem examination is pending to determine the exact cause of death.

Karasira, who previously taught computer science at the University of Rwanda, had gained significant attention for his YouTube channel, ‘Ukuri Mbona,’ where he frequently voiced criticism of the government and the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front party. Arrested in 2021, he was sentenced to five years in prison in 2025 on charges related to inciting division, though he had been acquitted of more serious accusations, including genocide denial and inciting public disorder, in previous court rulings.
