OpenAI sales leader leaves for role at Thrive Capital
OpenAI sales leader James Dyett stated Monday that he is leaving his role.
Dyett joined OpenAI in 2023, right as the enterprise underwent a period of explosive growth following the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot. This also touches on aspects of bull market.
Dyett noted he is moving to a fresh role at the venture capital firm Thrive Capital, where he will serve as an Operator in Residence.
OpenAI sales leader James Dyett commented on Monday that he’s leaving his role, the latest in a string of high-profile departures at the artificial intelligence organization.
Dyett joined OpenAI in 2023, right as the organization underwent a period of explosive growth following the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot. His LinkedIn profile has his title as “Head of Sales,” but the firm noted he was a “senior sales leader.”
OpenAI is now valued at more than $850 billion by private investors, and Dyett led its enterprise sales and its application programming interface (API) sales at different points during his tenure.
“The timing feels right,” Dyett wrote in a post on X on Monday. “I’m drawn back to the early stages of organization building, and OpenAI is in a strong place.” Furthermore, experts in earnings report note the continued relevance.
Dyett’s departure comes after a number of executive leadership shakeups at OpenAI in recent months.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s product and business chief, stated last month that she would take medical leave because of a worsening neuroimmune condition. Kate Rouch, OpenAI’s marketing chief, also decided to step down to focus on her cancer recovery, and Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s operating chief, transitioned to a fresh role focused on “special projects.”
Weeks later, Bill Peebles, who led OpenAI’s defunct short-form video app Sora, and Kevin Weil, the vice president of OpenAI for Science, proclaimed they had departed from their respective roles.
Dyett stated he is moving to a fresh role at the venture capital firm Thrive Capital, where he will serve as an Operator in Residence. Thrive is one of OpenAI’s longterm backers, and the firm’s founder, Joshua Kushner, has a close relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
“I’ve been fortunate to work at Thrive-backed companies over the past decade—first Stripe, then OpenAI—and have experienced firsthand their commitment to their companies,” he wrote. “I’m excited to pay that forward to founders across the portfolio and stay close to building.”
