Fatal Shark Attack Claims Life of Spearfisherman Off Queensland Coast
A tragic incident occurred off the north-eastern coast of Australia this past Sunday, resulting in the death of a 39-year-old man following a shark attack. Emergency responders were dispatched to a boat ramp on the Cassowary Coast, situated between Cairns and Townsville, shortly before noon after receiving reports of the encounter. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, the victim succumbed to his injuries after being brought back to shore.
Authorities have confirmed that the man was engaged in spearfishing near Kennedy Shoal, a reef located approximately 45 kilometers offshore, when the attack took place. According to police, the victim suffered a critical head injury during the encounter. He was pulled from the water by a companion who was diving alongside him at the time. The group returned to the mainland by private vessel, but the man was pronounced dead upon arrival.
This incident marks the second fatal shark attack in Australian waters within a two-week period, following a similar tragedy involving a spearfisherman near Perth. While shark encounters are not uncommon in the region, fatal incidents remain relatively rare. Local law enforcement is currently preparing a report for the coroner regarding the circumstances of the death, while providing support to the witnesses who were present during the event.
