Israel Intercepts Humanitarian Flotilla Near Cyprus, Activists Claim Piracy
Israeli commandos boarded more than 50 boats carrying aid for Gaza in international waters off Cyprus, according to the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF). The GSF said the raid, carried out 250 nautical miles from Gaza, was another unlawful act that violated the maritime blockade Israel has imposed on the territory.
Live footage released by the flotilla showed Israeli forces climbing aboard several vessels as passengers raised their hands. The GSF’s statement demanded safe passage for its non‑violent mission and accused the government of perpetuating a “genocidal siege” on Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the operation as “effectively neutralising a malicious plan” designed to break Israel’s isolation of Hamas. Israel’s foreign ministry reiterated that the blockade is lawful and that the flotilla’s aim was to support Hamas and obstruct peace efforts.
Last month, Israel seized 22 boats from the same flotilla near Crete, detaining 181 activists. All but two were released in Greece after international pressure; two were deported back to Israel after a 10‑day detention. The remaining vessels sailed from Turkey’s Marmaris, carrying over 460 activists from 45 countries.
Turkey’s foreign ministry condemned the interception as piracy, while Hamas official Basem Naim condemned Israel’s actions as state terrorism. The Israeli navy, under orders from the prime minister, praised its commander for the “outstanding job” performed.
The flotilla’s organizers said the boats carried food, baby formula and medical supplies for Gaza’s 2.1 million residents, many of whom remain displaced after the October 2023 conflict. The UN has warned that despite significant aid deliveries, basic services such as clean water and waste management remain scarce, and many families still live in overcrowded tents.
The incident underscores the ongoing tension over aid delivery to Gaza, as Israel maintains a blockade that critics say limits humanitarian access while preventing weapons from reaching Hamas.
