A major escalation in the ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread destruction across Ukraine, as a massive wave of Russian drone and missile strikes targeted the capital and several surrounding regions. The overnight assault, which involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, left at least four people dead and dozens more injured. Among the damaged infrastructure were residential buildings, schools, and cultural landmarks, including the Chornobyl Museum in Kyiv, which officials described as being effectively destroyed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv was a primary target of the bombardment, which triggered air raid sirens throughout the night. Emergency services were deployed across multiple districts to combat fires and clear debris from collapsed structures. In one instance, a strike near a school shelter trapped civilians behind falling rubble, while a nine-storey residential building in the Shevchenko district suffered a direct hit, resulting in fatalities. Beyond the capital, regions including Kharkiv, Odesa, and Sumy also reported significant impacts, with local authorities characterizing the strikes as a deliberate campaign against civilian areas.

Russian officials claimed the strikes were a retaliatory measure following recent Ukrainian military actions in eastern territories, specifically citing an attack on a student dormitory in Starobilsk. The Russian defense ministry further stated that the Oreshnik hypersonic missile was utilized during the operation. This weapon, capable of extreme speeds and difficult to intercept, has drawn sharp condemnation from international leaders, including representatives from France, Germany, and the European Union, who labeled the deployment a reckless escalation.

As the cleanup efforts continue, the Ukrainian air force reported that while hundreds of incoming projectiles were intercepted, dozens of direct hits were recorded across 54 locations. The human toll of the conflict was highlighted by public figures, including boxer Oleksandr Usyk and tennis player Marta Kostyuk, who spoke out about the ongoing suffering of civilians forced to seek refuge in bomb shelters. The situation remains tense as both sides trade accusations regarding the targeting of civilian versus military infrastructure.
