Spotify Integrates Apple’s HLS Tech, Revolutionizing Video Podcast Distribution
Spotify has revealed plans to integrate Apple’s HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) video technology, a move set to significantly enhance video podcast distribution and monetization for creators. This strategic adoption will enable shows hosted on Spotify to seamlessly publish and generate revenue from their video content on Apple Podcasts, effectively broadening their audience reach without necessitating any alterations to their current production setups.
The integration of HLS technology is poised to deliver a superior and more consistent video experience for listeners. This adaptive streaming technology automatically adjusts video quality in real-time, optimizing playback based on the user’s internet connection speed, whether they are on a high-speed Wi-Fi network or utilizing cellular data. The result is smoother streaming with reduced buffering and fewer abrupt drops in video quality, ensuring an uninterrupted viewing experience.
While the HLS upgrades are slated to roll out later this year, Spotify is simultaneously expanding avenues for creators to monetize their work. These include new direct sales opportunities and additional partner integrations. Furthermore, Spotify has already streamlined the process for podcast creators using various third-party hosting providersâsuch as Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspaceâto publish video podcasts directly on its platform and participate in the Spotify Partner Program for revenue generation. This initiative, announced earlier in the year, is now actively in effect.
This latest development underscores Spotify’s continued commitment to the burgeoning video podcasting sector, which is increasingly driving growth within the broader podcasting landscape. The company first introduced video podcasts in 2020 and has since made significant investments, including lowering monetization requirements for creators earlier this year to expand access. With nearly half a million shows and over 390 million users having streamed a video podcast on Spotify, the platform is solidifying its position by empowering creators to engage with viewers who prefer visual content.
