OpenAI Elevates ChatGPT Pro with Advanced Personal Finance Management Tools
OpenAI has introduced a significant expansion to its ChatGPT Pro service in the U.S., rolling out a new suite of personal finance management tools. This innovative feature allows subscribers to securely link their financial accounts directly within the chatbot interface, enabling comprehensive analysis of spending habits and facilitating future financial planning. The integration is made possible through a strategic partnership with Plaid, a leading financial data network, which supports connections to more than 12,000 financial institutions, including major players like Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Once connected, users gain access to a personalized dashboard displaying their portfolio performance, spending trends, active subscriptions, and upcoming payments.
This latest development arrives swiftly on the heels of OpenAI’s acquisition of the personal finance startup Hiro’s team in April, a venture previously supported by notable firms such as Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. OpenAI acknowledged the Hiro team’s specialized financial expertise as instrumental in the rapid deployment of this new product. Accessing these capabilities is straightforward for Pro users: they can initiate the process by selecting “Get started” under the “Finances” option in the ChatGPT sidebar or by typing “@Finances, connect my accounts” directly into a conversation. The chatbot then guides users through the secure account linking process via Plaid. Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to integrate support for Intuit, which promises to unlock advanced analytical features, such as assessing the tax implications of stock sales or evaluating the likelihood of credit card approval.
The introduction of these dedicated financial tools builds upon an existing trend, with OpenAI reporting that over 200 million users already pose financial queries to ChatGPT each month. The company highlights that its newer GPT-5.5 model exhibits enhanced contextual reasoning capabilities, a critical factor for accurately addressing complex financial questions. To refine this functionality, OpenAI collaborated with finance experts to establish benchmarks, ensuring continuous improvement in handling personal finance inquiries. The new integration enables users to seek detailed insights, from understanding recent spending fluctuations (“I feel like I’ve been spending more recently. Has anything changed?”) to developing long-term financial strategies (“Help me build a plan to be ready to buy a house in my area in the next 5 years.”). Users maintain full control over their data, with options to remove specific account connections via “Settings > Apps > Finances,” which initiates a 30-day data removal process. Furthermore, users can easily review and delete their financial memories directly from the Finances page.
This move by OpenAI reflects a broader industry trend where AI companies are increasingly developing specialized products for sensitive domains like health, finance, and personal life, moving beyond generalized chatbot capabilities. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have previously introduced health-related tools, while Perplexity recently unveiled its own financial research product. Initially, OpenAI’s new personal finance tools are accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers on both the web platform and iOS devices. The company stated its intention to refine the product based on feedback gathered from these initial Pro users before making it available to a broader audience, including Plus subscribers.
